NATIONAL SYMBOLISM
Tanzania became an independent nation in 1961 with Zanzibar joining in 1964. Ever since its inaugural lighting at the summit of Mount Kilamanjaro, the torch has become a national symbol of freedom, enlightenment, knowledge, love respect and unity. It is central to the country's identity and can be found on the national coat or arms and currency,
Every year, from April to October, the torch is 'raced' to communities in every municipal region across the country shining the torchlight on accomplished projects. It is an honour to be chosen to receive the 'Mwenge wa Uruhu' which is ignited by the country's president.
STUDY WITH A TREE MEANING
'Soma na Mti' is much more than a tree-planting scheme. It is a continuous campaign which will be rolled out across the Tanzanian education system to against global warming, deforestation environment degradation, waste and water, energy and food insecurity.
TRANSFORMATION FROM CAMPAIGN TO MOVEMENT
The principal focus is to teach children, train teenagers, young adults and upskill farmers in new methods of agriulture and forestry known as 'agroforestry'. The campaign will be financed by global climate change and sustainability investments under the United Nations Paris Agreement. The aim is to unify schools and communities with technology from which information will expand knowledge and innovation. Ultimately, once the campaign is set in motion, it can expand across national borders in a ripple effect, ensuring millions of trees and biochar tonnes are removing billions of tonnes of CO2.
